FAIRY Castles on Stowes Hill, the site of the Cheesewring, are causing concern among archaeologists.

Stuart Dow, a voluntary archaeologist, said: ‘I went to Stowes Hill, an important Neothlic site, with a friend, and was shocked to find fairy castles all over the place.’

Stuart, who also belongs to Timekeepers, a group which carries out clearance work around stone circles on Bodmin Moor to protect them, added: ‘We need to raise greater awareness of the importance of this archaeological site. Moving the stones is changing the structure of this protected site.

‘I have nothing against fairy castles on the beach, but there is a time and a place for them and this archaeological site isn’t it.’

Stuart said the fairy castles are being dismantled. On one day 52 were taken down, but more keep appearing.

On their Facebook page the Caradon Archaeology group said: ‘Stowes Hill is a 6,000 year old settlement, built by our Neolithic forebears. It is a Protected Scheduled Monument, in a World Heritage Site, County Wildlife Site, AONB, Regionally Important Geology Site – it has more protections than Stonehenge!

‘This practice is not only vandalism it is illegal. If any one sees anyone attempting to move stones in the Pound please warn them of this.’
