A GRAND musical procession lead by the Hugo the horse and a newly-elected ‘Mock Mayor’ is among the highlights of fair weekend in St Germans.
An inter-pub tug of war, May pole, circus skill workshops, arts and crafts, morris dancing and lots of live music feature in the events, which start today.
The village fair day occurred as early as 1284 and was revived in 2012.
It was originally held around the Old Nut Tree which stood on the green at the top of Old Quay Lane but this was felled for the road.
Participants now carry a new nut tree through the village with the rest of the colourful procession behind Hugo the horse.
Organisers say: ‘We are keeping the old traditions of electing he least suitable candidate as our Mock Mayor, ensuring that those who do not wear an oak leaf get wet (although we refrain from dipping in the trough and these days use water-pistols) and decorating the village with spring green.’
Today (May 25) people will be decorating the procession route with greenery and bunting - residents can put up their own or get in touch to help. There’s live music at Scholar’s with the HaHas.
Tomorrow (May 26) at the Eliot Arms mock mayor and mayoress elections take place and there’s live music from Girl Friday
Sunday morning at the Recreation Feld starts at 11am with the inter-pub tug of war, May pole dance and aerial circus skills.
The procession through village starts at 12.30pm - everyone is welcome to join in with something to make a noise.
Entertainment continues throughout the afternoon outside the Eliot.
