THE life and times of an ancient Cornish King are being explored at a new exhibition in Liskeard.
King Doniert was the only king to rule in Cornwall for whom documentation can be found. He is said to have drowned in the River Fowey in the year 875 AD.
With The King Doniert pub now open next door in the town centre, now is a timely moment to consider what limited evidence exists about the man whose name the pub bears, said Stuart House trustee Rachel Bennett.
Rachel has put together the exhibition with input from others, including the Old Cornwall Society.
‘We ask questions about what sort of king he might have been, about his death, and about the history of his stone, which has stood on the Redgate-Minions road probably since the late ninth century, and has always been an object of speculation,’ she said.
The King Doniert exhibition will run until July 7. Stuart House is open Mon-Fri 9.30am - 3.30pm and on Saturday mornings; entry to the house and its gardens is free.
