TWO sixth-formers are taking part in a national education programme to learn about the horrors of the Holocaust. Holly Nevill and Rhianna Colvin will be visiting the Auschwitz concentration camp, where millions of Jewish and minority people were murdered during the Second World War. The pair, both students in the Sixth Form of Callington Community College, have been selected to participate in this year’s ‘Lessons From Auschwitz’ project. Memory This is an annual event run by the Holocaust Educational Trust to preserve the memory of those who suffered during the Holocaust. Holly and Rhianna, with their teacher, Dr Peter Maunder, will attend a series of four events including a visit to the Auschwitz and Birkenau camps in Poland. They will meet survivors of the Holocaust, tour the concentration camps and take part in follow-up activities in order to preserve the memory of those who perished, suffered or survived. The Rotary Club of Callington has made a generous donation to help finance the trip for the students. They were presented with the cheque by Keith Harris, president of the Rotary Club and an ex-teacher at Callington. Mr Harris said: ‘The club is looking forward to them giving a presentation to them about their experiences.’ Sean Morris, principal of the college, said: ‘This is an opportunity for two of our students to gain a real understanding of the Holocaust – one of the most significant events of the 20th century – and to pass on what they learn so that no one forgets how appalling the Holocaust was and so that we all remain vigilant.
