A SECONDARY school will be shut for three days after three members of staff tested positive for the coronavirus.

Callington Community College told 17 students and four staff members to isolate on Friday after they’d had contact with one member of staff who’d tested positive for Covid-19.

The school has today (Sunday) learned of two more staff members who have received positive test results – and with further staff now having to self-isolate, the college will not have enough staff available to safeguard all students adequately.

There are 60 teaching staff working at Callington including part-time staff.

In a statement to the Cornish Times, college principal Wendy Ainsworth said: “We have been informed today of a further two staff members who have additionally tested positive. We have again identified close contacts and advised them to self isolate also.

“Due to the staffing constraints brought about by requiring the self isolation of other staff members, I have made the difficult decision to close the College for three days. This is necessary to ensure I can safeguard all students, and staff numbers are too restrictive for this currently.

“We will review staffing on Wednesday and will make a decision then as to whether we can fully reopen or partially reopen to students.”

All students who are in receipt of free school meals will be able to collect a meal from the College on the days it is shut, said the principal.
