Military students have been inspired by a visit from a local MP who boasts more than a decade of military service on his CV.
Johnny Mercer met Military Academy students from Duchy College at Stoke Climsland, where he was shown around the training wing facility, before speaking to students about his experience in the military.
Before becoming Conservative MP for Plymouth Moor View, Jonny Mercer served from 2001 to 2014. He became a Captain in the 29th Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.
He spoke to students about his three tours of Afghanistan and what inspired him to become a Member of Parliament, before taking several questions.
Brandon Stevens, who is studying Level 3 Military Academy at Duchy College, said: ‘It was interesting to hear about his experiences in the Military and the advice he was giving us about taking every opportunity we can is really valuable.’
Fellow student Mathew Mitchel said: ‘To hear about Johnny Mercer’s step from 29 Commando into politics was really inspiring.’
Mr Mercer said: ’It is just as useful to me to get an update on how our young people are assessing the role of the military and politics in their lives as it hopefully was to them to meet someone who can put both these things into context.’
Curriculum Lead for Military Academy Jamie Crisp said: ‘Chatting with the students about his time with the forces and the diversity of roles individuals move into after their time in the military was really valuable.’
