SMALL steps and fun activities are making a big difference to the planet in the run-up to Cornwall Climate Action Day next Friday (June 11)

Author Ellie Jackson has teamed up with 20 organisations to provide an inspirational set of resources for teachers and parents.

With the G7 summit just around the corner, these provide the perfect way for children to get out and discover the natural world as well as exploring some of the tough issues facing world leaders.

The Climate Action Day website brings together some of Cornwall’s best-known environmental groups such as Surfers Against Sewage and the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, smaller charities doing vital work in their spheres, and UK groups like the RSPB, the National Trust and Sustrans. They’ve contributed videos, activities, games and materials all aimed at showing what can be done by each of us to combat climate change.

Every single school in Cornwall received copies of Ellie’s Wild Tribe Heroes books in March, and teachers have already been using the stories and their accompanying resources as a springboard into discussion and action.

Now, Ellie hopes that schools, home-educators and parents will tap into the free Climate Action Day activities and ideas as they plan learning to coincide with the G7 summit.

2020 was recorded by NASA as the hottest year on record with predictions of continued temperature rises over the next century of up to five degrees centigrade. A rise of just 1.5 degrees will see extreme and more frequent weather events and mass extinction of many species.

“Climate change and ecological crisis: those are big concepts and can feel overwhelming to adults as well as children,” says Ellie.

“But by looking through a magnifying glass at the smallest creatures, we can all connect with the natural world. By taking small and enjoyable steps we can make bigger things happen. And when children believe in something and care about it, they want to see the adults protect it too.”
