AT the Connon Bridge tip recently, I asked a man about to dump a van full of 'waste' if I could have some items, which I could reuse. He agreed, and I started to transfer things from his van to my car. A tip worker shouted to me that this was not allowed, so the man and I arranged to meet up outside the tip, so that I could have the things I wanted. I helped him offload his rubbish, including two small but sturdy cardboard boxes full of waste cardboard, which I emptied into the appropriate skip. I asked the man if he wanted the boxes back. He didn't so I put them in my car for reuse. The tip worker came over, wagging his finger at me angrily, and said that I'd already been warned, and if I put anything else in my car, I'd be banned from the tip. I could not believe that this applied to empty boxes but apparently so. I saw very many other reusable items in skips. Caradon District Council's recycling lorries are plastered with the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' slogan, but they do not seem to be making much effort on the 'reuse' aspect. As pointed out on the recent Channel 4 programme, 'Dumped', there is no such thing as throwing away – 'away' is still on this planet. I would urge readers not to take reusable items to Connon Bridge but to take them to the Reuse warehouse, poorly signposted, but on the industrial estate, second road on the left (southbound) after the Liskeard Hospital turning, on the ring road.
