A disabled dog-lover kicked a three-year-old boy in a row over dog-walking on a scenic beach. Janet Chaston, 48, earlier set her pet, Skipper, on the child as she was 'politely reminded' by Aden Hawkins there was a dog ban on Looe Beach. She struck the boy as he tried to hide from her advancing Tibetan Terrier behind the 38-year-old local man, Liskeard magistrates heard on Friday. Mrs Chaston was in court charged with two counts of common assault. She denied the allegations. The court heard Mr Hawkins raised his foot to protect the child, to which Mrs Chaston lashed out saying: 'If you are going to kick my dog, I am going to kick that child.' Mr Hawkins, from East Looe, said that in the event her foot hit the tot's hand. Mr Hawkins told magistrates how the row broke out on November 12 as Mrs Chaston walked her Tibetan terrier, Baby Shitsu and Collie on Looe's main beach. He said: 'I politely told her that there was a ban on dogs. Out of the blue, she proceeded to hit me. 'Her dog ran towards the child and she made no attempt to call her dog back – and by this point the child was screaming and crying. 'I raised my foot and the dog stepped away from my foot and back to its owner. 'She was very ably trying to kick the child. He had begun to hold on to my leg like a monkey, screaming. 'The kick was aimed at the child and I was protecting the child. She kicked him on the hand. Mr Hawkins went on: 'I absolutely love dogs, but it is not uncommon for children to be scared of them. 'As a responsible adult, I feel you should take care of them.' A female witness told the court that she heard Mrs Chaston, a former carer who is registered disabled, accuse Mr Hawkins of kicking her dog and say she was going to kick the child in return. Magistrates rejected Mrs Chaston's story that Mr Hawkins had tried to drag her off the beach and had cut himself with car keys to pretend she had hit him, Chairman Peter Howard said her claims were 'fanciful' and told her: 'We believe you intended to cause injury to the child.' Mrs Chaston, of Glebelands, Looe, was convicted of both counts of common assault, one on Mr Hawkins and another on the child. The child can not be named for legal reasons. Mrs Chaston was released on conditional bail and will be sentenced at Bodmin Magistrates' Court on May 8.
