Callington Colts 3

Plymouth Kolts 3

In this eagerly awaited clash between the U-18 Cambridge league champions and the cup winners and league runners-up, it was unfortunate that Callington were without five members of the side that has seen them undefeated at home since the middle of November, a truly remarkable achievement at this level.

Kolts seemed to have the early control as Colts started the game with only ten men due to work commitments. However, with the outstanding James Shorter showing the same determined consistency with his tackles and recovery that has been his hallmark all season. Kolts were forced to stick with the long ball down the middle, but they played it very well. Their quick forward play really tested Darren Wooley and the recently-signed Lee Beer, who was involved with Sam Stewart with a bit of lack of communication which let in Kolts for the first goal. New pairing of Gerry and Martin in midfield were taking time to strike up an understanding by.

Callington went two down within five minutes of the second half and it looked as though the record which the home side held would be broken. However, the reason that they have had such a tremendous season soon surfaced. Plymouth Kolts, sensing they had won the match, were soon to find that they had a fight on their hands when top scorer Williams got Colts back into the game when a through-ball from the talented Richard Llloyd set him free and he was able to pick his spot from close range. Smith was working hard but the little bit of magic was missing.

Kolts extended their lead and Callington were really up against it, but when the going gets tough, up steps Darren Wooley and from a pin-point free-kick from Beer into the penalty area, Wolley got to the ball first and headed firmly into the net. It set up a great finale to a tremendous season for both sides involved. After a few near misses from both teams, it was fitting that Gary Williams, Colts' top scorer, with only a few minutes left, would create a chance and miss it. However, he was able to get to the rebound and turn the ball back toward the goal where a defender helped to ensure that the ball crossed the line. However Williams would protest at the suggestion that it was an own goal.

This was a great finish to the best season by any Callington Colts side. Good luck to all the players as they progress to senior football.
