‘CREATING a car park for Plymouth would do little for the economy of South East Cornwall,’ according to Looe mayor and Cornwall Councillor Armand Toms.

His comment came after a suggestion that a park and ride system be created in the Saltash area in order to reduce car numbers on the Tamar Bridge.

Speaking during a Cornwall Council meeting, Cllr Toms said he would prefer to see efforts put into creating jobs at the new Broadmoor development at Saltash, which would then ‘negate the need for going over the bridge’ in the first place.

The bridge is forecast to reach capacity within the next 15 years.

Cornwall Council has given approval to a £20,000 study into pricing options for the bridge.

Cllr Toms said he passionately believed that tolls on the bridge should be scrapped.

Both Cornwall and Plymouth City Councils have also approved plans to carry out a longer-term study into strategic options for the River Tamar Crossings as a whole.
