ARGYLE manager Bobby Williamson has made an impassioned appeal to the fans to get behind his team tomorrow when unbeaten millionaire league leaders Wigan Athletic come to town. 'The fans at the Gillingham match got behind us in the second half, we raised our game and were eventually rewarded with a victory. 'If they can do that against Wigan then we might just get another one,' said the manager. The fans have been restrained of late as they come to terms with Championship football. Three years of almost continuous success has left the supporter expecting a home win rather than wanting one. This is to be expected, but it doesnt take a magician to work out that Argyle could and should have won their home games against Leeds and Wolves. Add to that the 3-2 defeats at QPR and Ipswich that should have produced at least draws, then it's not hard to imagine that with a bit of luck Argyle would be a comfortable top five team and not languishing in a mid table at 12th. The manager is determined to give all his senior players a run out at some stage, rather than bring in loan deal players. 'I have still not ascertained whether everyone can play at this level. We have enough players here to do the job, he said. Williamson has only three fit central defenders in Graham Coughlin, Paul Wotton and Mathias Doumbe to call on. And with Hasney Aljofree returning form a loan period at Sheffield Wednesday with a damaged shoulder, choices are limited. Argyle's biggest threat will come from Wigan strikers Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington, who have scored 16 goals between them already this season. The pair cost over £2.5 million. With Lee McCulloch and £215,000 buy from Torquay United David Graham thrown in as quality back-up, then it's not hard to imagine the pace and power Argyle's defenders will be up against. Add Brazilian defender Emmerson Thome, who Sunderland once paid £4.5 million for and Danish international Per Frendsen prompting from midfield, then Argyle's midfield must also be on top form to prevent the front two from receiving quality service. Williamson may even opt to play five across the middle to counteract this. Argyle have major pluses of their own. Mickey Evans and Stevie Crawford may well be the front pairing, or the manager could throw open the doors to Nathan Lowndes and Steven Milne. David Norris may be needed for his energy, leaving Keith Lasley to take a more central role, with Lee Hodges possibly fitting in on the left side. Whatever team the manager picks, Argyle fans will need to roar on their charges for the whole 90 minutes. The reserve league is beginning to become a nonsense. Argyle followed their 10-1 trouncing of Swansea City, by beating them again in the cup 5-0. Not the ideal preparation for senior players who are trying to impress for first team call-up and younger players who are just beginning their professional careers. Argyle's youngsters are continuing to show promise. The U18s saw off Swansea City 2-1, but the U16s have yet to win a match having lost 1-0 at home to Exeter City. Argyle ladies are in action on Sunday, travelling to Isca Vikings to begin the defence of their Devon Women's Cup. Argyle need a boost after suffering two five-goal defeats in successive weeks at title favourites Reading Royals.
