VOLUNTEERS from a Callington supermarket have visited their colleagues in Tavistock - on foot - to raise funds for two health charities.

Staff from Tesco traversed the Tamar Valley on a sponsored walk to their sister store across the river in Devon.

The purpose of the 12-mile hike was to raise money for Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation.

Thousands of staff from stores across the country are taking part in walks this month with the aim of raising £21million for the two charities.

Callington store manager Martin Hawkins said: ‘It took us four and a half hours, walking down into and up out of the Tamar Valley, and then down again to cross the Tavy, but our customers have been very supportive.

‘It was a great way to demonstrate the benefits of healthy exercise while enjoying the beautiful scenery – even if part of it was in the rain.’
