Sun Life East Cornwall Invitation XI v Keynsham

In the picturesque setting of Lanhydrock on a fine pitch prepared by Brian Read of the local club, a fine advertisement for Under-15 cricket unfolded. Boys from the East Cornwall League met a highly-successful Keynsham eleven who batted first.

Early success for Lanhydrock's Luke Harvie and over-age skipper Andy Shorten preceded a half century stand between N.Reed and D.Gerrish which became the foundation of their side's innings. Martin Bell from Bude and spinner Dave Bradbeer from Tideford pulled their team back into the action aided by fine catching and stumping by Callington's Mike Vanstone.

Something like a tail wag offered 'under-age' Steve Norton (Newquay) the chance to shine, which he did gleefully. 130 all out by Keynsham looked quite get-table.

Daniels Conway (Menheniot) and Tilley (South Petherwin) started confidently, if slowly. A minor collapse arrested in part by Vanstone became serious when the enterprising Tilley departed. Skipper Shorten, gamely assisted by Norton, pulled the Cornish side back into contention only for the tail to fall in a brave attempt to smash the runs needed in quick time.

It had been a fine game on a lovely day and full credit should be recorded for the young players, to umpires Nigel Vivian and Mike Williams and to the host Club, Lanhydrock.
