Cricket- SunLife of Canada
The Sun Life of Canada East Cornwall Youth Cricket League is dedicated solely to the furtherance of cricket among young people in the East of Cornwall and the Tamar Valley.
It operates competitions at Under 12 - 'getting going'- level, aiming for a minimum of four 'Gordon Walters Cup' matches with friendlies encouraged, Under 14 - 'development'- level, a minimum of 6 league matches with an additional knock out cup, and at Under 16 -'transition' - level, with a minimum 6-match league for school leavers and younger progressing players.
Basic fixturing is incorporated in a directory of involved clubs and their grounds. Subscriptions are low and policy is decided by participating clubs. Matches are normally 20 overs but there is provision for longer games as required. Representative matches are played when possible.
Experienced organisers can advise new managers, access to good coaching can be arranged in conjunction with clubs and links with other youth cricket and county bodies are maintained. The impetus comes from people who see that the only source of new young players to continue the cricket tradition is the pool of beginners taken under the wings of existing, or specialising, clubs. The League aims to offer a framework to make the tasks involved less isolated, more rewarding and with visible progress.
For over a decade, Sun Life of Canada have sponsored the East Cornwall League in addition to their National Youth commitments. The League is grateful for their invaluable support and faith in the work being undertaken.
The League has pioneered wider integration by linking with West Cornwall youth cricket in the Cornish Youth Cricket Alliance, which is pledged to increasing awareness of the aspirations and achievements of those who serve cricket through youth schemes.
Every adult club, individually or within an area 'consortium' should be looking to provide some structured youth cricket: the League is an ideal stimulus, vehicle and support.
