Cricket- Edwards Cup
Camborne v Callington
Callington struck an important blow for East Cornish cricket when they defeated Vinter cup winners Camborne at Boscawen Park.
Batting first Camborne rattled up 62 before Marc Sweeney fell to a Lee Pascoe catch at mid-off from the bowling of Pluckrose. Dave Pascoe was unbeaten through out the innings scoring 43 from 54 balls, assisted by Barry Purchase who crashed 27 n.o from 22 balls. Andrew Snowdon also claimed a wicket - that of professional Derek Tait - but Pluckrose could be pleased with his 1 for 24 off five overs.
The target of 130 to win was very gettable, and Callington started like an express train. They put on 49 for the first wicket when Andy Hocking was caught behind, the first of three Medlen catches, for 11 runs.
Snowdon and John Sylvester put on another 50, before the West Indian too succumbed to the wicket keeper. Snowdon went on to make 48, to earn himself the man of match award, and put Callington in the driving seat.
However the panic button again proved too tempting and Legg and Hatch both went cheaply to give Camborne a glimmer of hope, as Adam Mitchell's medium pacers took four quick wickets for 16 runs.
However this was Callington's trophy as Pascoe and Peter Tancock saw them home to the delight of the vocal travelling fans, and the irritation of some of the Camborne players. Jamie Hatch lifted the cup, which was the first Edwards cup success for Callington since 1977, and the silverware will sit proudly at New Road, in the company of the Hawkey Cup, won a month before.
