Cricket- County Division Three

Menheniot v South Petherwin

An almost perfect day for cricket greeted the sides at the village ground on Saturday, as Menheniot batted first against their visitors from South Petherwin on what turned out to be a lively, bouncy track.

Phil Adsett and Alex Tunnadine, opening for the home side, put on 50 for the first wicket in 50 overs before Tunnadine was out for a well-made 24 when he once again chipped one back to Congdon to be caught and bowled.

This bought Simon Hunt to the crease for a rare appearance and he and Adsett then proceeded to put together a partnership of 140 for the second wicket which was a joy to watch.

Hunt went in the 35th over for a stroke-making 89 which included 11 fours and two sixes to leave Menheniot on 190-2 with 13 overs to go. The fact that the score did not top the 300 mark from this platform was credit to the South Petherwin side who despite having to do plenty of leather-chasing, never gave up right to the very end.

Jerry Randle was the only batsman to get going after Hunt as he finished on 31 not out to add 50 with Adsett for the seventh wicket as the home side eventually totalled 280-6 after 48 overs. Right there from the start to the finish was Adsett, who carried his bait for a chanceless 105 not out with an innings of undoubted class which contained 13 boundaries and set the platform for the eventual large total. All the visiting bowlers stuck to their task well, with Roger Gerry returning the best figures of 3-65.

Faced with the daunting task of getting this large total, South Petherwin suffered an early set-back when Dennis was caught behind off Stuart Taylor, slashing at one that bounced a bit.

The two Clements brothers, Ian and Dereck then batted steadily to take the score onto 76 in the 24th over before the latter was a little unlucky to be bowled by Adsett for 17. After this, as so often happens when chasing an almost impossible task, batsmen came in and went in an effort to keep up with the scoring rate and despite useful contributions from Congdon with 20 and Davey with 27 not out.

The visitors were eventually bowled out in the 46th over for 184. Ian Clements formed the backbone of the innings with a battling 64 before being caught off Randle. Stuart Taylor bowled well to take 3-23 and Hunt chipped in with 2-39. Adsett completed a fine all-round performance by taking 4-47 with the ball, which saw Menheniot complete a comfortable victory over a side who traditionally they have always struggled to beat.
