Cricket- County Division Three

Fowey v Callington

Callington won their eighth consecutive match on Saturday when they defeated Fowey by 50 runs. On being asked to bat, disaster struck Callington when opener Pete Tancock, who, in his own words, was seeing the ball like a football, was caught first ball.

Youngsters Andrew Shorten and Dominic Farris then took the game to Fowey and despite some lively bowling by Joe Leach and Chris Taylor, they added 41 in seven overs before Leach bowled Farris for 23. Vic Voyzey then joined Shorten and they added 81 before Voyzey became Andrew Bennetts' first victim.

Two balls later, Bennetts removed skipper Gareth Evely, but luckily for Callington, Shorten was still dispatching the ball to all parts of the ground. Finding the perfect ally in Steve Wyatt, Shorten progressed to his highest score, 82, in adult cricket before he was caught, his knock including 12 fours. Older brother James lasted only three balls but Wyatt and Ian Hunn added 60 in nine overs and Callington finished on 213 with Bennetts being the pick of the Fowey bowlers with 3-56.

Fowey's reply started well with Tony Wyatt and Mike Hamilton looking in fine form against Callington's pace attack. The introduction of spin twins Evely and Jon Nicholls then saw the run rate drastically reduced.

Evely struck first, having Wyatt caught for 20 and then returning the favour by removing Bennetts. Whilst this was going on, Hamilton was steadily moving towards his 50. When he was finally out for 58 off Nicholls, the game skipped away from Fowey. Despite a knock of 28 by Darren Kirwin, Fowey faded away and the game ended with Fowey 50 runs short, still in fear of relegation and Callington keeping alive their promotional aspirations.
