Fowey v Bude

Another poor batting performance by Fowey, dismissed for exactly 100, left their North Cornwall opposition with an easy task as they duly knocked off the required runs in only 15 overs for the loss of one wicket.

Wickets tumbled from the second over of the match as the Bude bowlers Martindale and Scown put a stranglehold on the home side with their tight, accurate combination of medium pace and slow bowling.

Fowey, in a desparate situation at 46 for 8 at the end of the opening bowlers' unbroken 32 overs spell, was indebted to middle order batsman Tony Whyatt. Taking on a straight bat defensive role at the beginning of his innings, he was then able to open up during the latter stages of the 48 overs and made a much needed and undefeated score of 33. Whyatt was given good support by tail end batsmen Jo Leach and Leon Farrow that enabled Fowey to just reach the ton. Martindale and Scown's excellent spell of bowling was reflected by their figures of 4 for 20 and 4 for 23 respectively off 16 overs apiece of which 7 were clean bowled dismissals.

Bude's hard hitting openers, Robert May and Ian Mill set about the Fowey bowling as through it was a 20 overs Hawkey Cup game and although five bowlers tried to contain the flow of runs, it was not until the target was in sight that Leon Farrow dismissed May for 37. Ian Mill was 45 not out as the game came to an early finish giving Bude victory by 9 wickets.
