Cricket- County Division Three (East)

Newquay v Menheniot

Menheniot made the trip to Newquay on Sunday in this rearranged division three match and, upon winning the toss, elected to beat on a flat but grassy wicket.

Phil Adsett and Keith Willcock opened the innings against some tight bowling from Booth and Hawkey, putting on 33 before Willcock was bowled by a good one from Hawkey for 18. John Massey then added 17 before Melvin Rigler joined Adsett at the crease to slowly but surely add the runs that would take the visitors towards setting a challenging target.

Progress was not easily made and at the 38 over mark, Menheniot had reached 129-3 with Adsett having been dismissed by Harrison got a gritty 46 which set a platform for the last 10 overs. Rigler, at this stage, was run out for a dogged 24 which left Ian Goldsmith to start the much needed acceleration before he too was run out for 27. This set the stage for young Stuart Taylor with assistance from Jeremy Randle and his old man pushed the score to 225 from 48 overs with a knock of 43 not out, which was a delight to watch as he sent the ball to all parts of what is a big Newquay ground.

Ian Goldsmith and John Randle opened the bowling for Menheniot against a Newquay top order that most of the visitors had not come across before. They both bowled superbly to tie the home batting down and with wickets falling regularly, Newquay found themselves at 63-5 at the half-way stage. Willcocks held three sharp catches close to the wicket to assist with these dismissals but if Menheniot thought they were going to cruise home from here they were in for a rude awakening.

The introduction of Tony Roberts to the wicket to anchor the innings and first Harrison and then Willmott to produce the shots looked likely to take this game away from the village side. The scoring rate increased alarmingly and it needed the re-introduction of Goldsmith, who had been rested, to wrestle the initiative away from Newquay. He bowled intelligently to deny the home batsmen the scoring opportunities that they needed and with Adsett having the dangerous Harrison caught in the deep by Stuart Taylor, things were in the melting pot again.

It was Taylor that skipper Adsett turned too, to bowl the last overs in conjunction with Goldsmith and having been hit for two big sixes by Willmott he settled down to take a leaf out of Goldsmith's book and bowl with thought to make it very difficult for the home side to keep up with the scoring rate. It was Goldsmith who accounted for both Willmott and Roberts and when Taylor had Middleton caught, Newquay despite a gallant effort had been dismissed for 190 in the last of 48 overs. All the Menheniot bowlers did well. John Randle produced his usual lean and mean spell to take 2-18 from 12 overs. Stuart Taylor is fast growing up in cricketing terms and can look back mon a fine all-round performance. But it is probably Goldsmith who can take the most satisfaction from this match. He never gives anything other than 100 per cent when he plays, but by his own admission had not been at his best this season. This match winning performance of 6-42 could be the start of better things to come.
