Cricket- County Division Three (East)
Fowey v St Minver
Having won the toss and electing to insert the opposition, Fowey were unable to achieve an early breakthrough as the St Minver openers, Kent and Hawkin made a cautious but steady start against the home bowling attack of Mick Meares and Jo Leach. It was not until the score had reached 75 that the first wicket fell, N Kent (34) lbw to Andrew Bennetts, and for a while the Fowey bowlers kept a tight rein on the scoring as Butler and Daly soon followed back to the pavilion.
The arrival of Shaun Hawken to the wicket to join his brother, however, saw an acceleration in the run rate as he despatched the bowling to the boundary with relative ease. Their fourth wicket partnership of 58 came to an end when Shaun Hawken (34) was caught by Robbie Bennetts off Tony Whyatt's first spell of bowling of the season.
Robbie Hawken with an undefeated 92 then took control of some loose and wayward bowling during the last 10 overs as a further 77 runs pushed the final St Minver score to 207 for 4.
In reply, Fowey got off to the worse possible start with Andy Rogers bowled for nought off the second ball. A partnership of 33 between Robbie and Andrew Bennetts then helped to consolidate the early batting before the latter unfortunately played on having scored an attacking 28 runs.
At the halfway stage of the innings and with the score proceeding steadily, the introduction of Robbie Hawken and Ray Butler saw the immediate dismissal of Robbie Bennetts for 29 and a slowing down of the required run rate. Despite a quick fired 22 from Mick Meares and a patient 16 from Mike Hamilton, Fowey were never really in contention from that stage on as wickets continued to fall at too rapid a rate and the home side was finally dismissed in the 40th over, to give St Minver a 73 runs victory and 20 points to maintain their top of the table challenge.
