Cricket- County Division Three

Callington v Newquay

Callington kept the pressure on league leaders St Minver with an emphatic 92-run victory over Newquay. Upon winning the toss, Callington elected to bat and, on a hot sunny afternoon, lost Andrew Shorten to the game's third ball. Despite this setback, Trevor Collins and Peter Tancock stuck to their task and added 65 before Tancock holed out for 33. Dominic Farris and Collins then took the attack to Newquay. Despite finding runs hard to come by from the end Tony Roberts was bowling, Collins and Farris added 102 before Farris was run out for 40.

The next over saw Collins adjudged lbw for 70 despite registering 10 on the smileometer and at 167-4 and two new batsmen at the wicket, a large total looked distant. Vic Voyzey and James Shorten had other ideas. In the last 10 overs, they added a valuable total of 78 runs, with Voyzey scoring an undefeated 40 and Shorten out for 35.

Newquay's response against the attack of Mark James and Jon Nicholls made watching paint dry look more exciting. In 28 overs, they slipped to 57-7 with only Matt Brooks and John Harris reaching double figures and hitting the ball off the square. Having the luxury of such a daunting lead, skipper Gareth Evely gave all Callington's youngsters a bowl and despite some hard hitting by Andy Willmott the youngsters stuck to their task. Willmott was playing the innings of his career as he reached 59 and gave Newquay's total an air of respectability and it finally finished on 153 all out and 20 more points for Callington.
