Cricket- County Division Six (East)- Tideford fall to mighty Werrington

Werrington v Tideford

Tideford won the toss and elected to bat first on a well prepared wicket. They lost their first wicket at 18 with Luff departing for seven. Most of the batsmen who followed played themselves in without anyone going on to play a major innings, Olver's 34 being the top score, and this was to prove a significant factor in the outcome of the match.

The innings began to falter in the middle-order until R Holland joined Stone in an eighth wicket partnership that produced 48 runs, with Holland hitting a well struck 33 n.o. Tideford finally closed on 161-8, a total which was competitive but about 20 or so runs short of perhaps what it should have been.

Swain struck early in the Werrington reply to have Skinner stumped by Olver with the score on eight and D Holland removed Turner on 15. However D Baker and Wills then added a further 78 runs before Wills was removed by a fine catch in the deep by D Holland for 35 off Luff.

The veteran left-hander Baker was batting well and proving to be a major obstacle in Tideford's attempt to win the match. With skipper Holland's bowling options limited due to unavailability, he turned to the under-used Shaw, the spearhead of Tideford's promotion winning side of 1991.

Shaw rolled back the years with an immaculate display of line and length, reeking havoc in the Werrington middle-order. In a spell of six overs which yielded a return of 3-6, he bowled D Baker, for a fine 80, Hanner for 17 and with the help of Swain's annual catch in the outfield had B Baker caught for five.

Unfortunately, it was not enough and a nervous lower-order finally got Werrington home with two overs to spare.
