Callington's 2000 campaign got off to a disappointing start at Cape Cornwall, and if cricket is all about batting, bowling and fielding, then Callington failed on all three counts. They did, however, win the toss and invited their hosts to take first knock.

The home side laboured in the first 15 overs against the seam attack of John Sylvester and Gareth May. However, County captain Gary Thomas and Antiguan professional Wilden Cornwall opened their shoulders and crashed a partnership of 119 to take the score on to 127 when Cornwall was trapped leg before by Callington's ex-County skipper Godfrey Furse. Thomas went for 64 and then young Ryan Harvey smacked a surprise 33 off 19 balls to set Callington a difficult run chase.

With a good start needed, Callington could have done without losing Andrew Snowdon and Godfrey Furse early, both run out to direct hits. Sylvester made a steady 50 before being bowled by the dependable Graham Trenwith when he was in danger of running out of partners.

Bill Prosson made a quick 15 including two large sixes and Lee Pascoe a dozen when the game was already lost, but when returning to the clubhouse there were at least two members of the first XI in each corner taking turns with the Dunce Cap. In the end, they were skittled out for 108 to give St Just maximum points. Graham Trenwith again proved what a fine bowler he is with another five wickets against Callington - this time for 60 runs.
