Tideford v Grampound Road

The pitches have become very hard in the recent spell of hot and dry weather and it was D Prisk for Grampound who used the higher bounce to penetrate the Tideford batting.

Tideford chose to bat first and were soon in trouble with returning Dave Lockett removed, caught at the wicket off a lifting ball during the first over without score. Gerry Snowdon never looked comfortable and was soon back in the pavilion, also a victim of Prisk. A third wicket stand of 110 between Luiten and Lindfield steadied the Tideford effort. Luiten was bowled by Dolby from an unusually low ball, for a flowing 61 which included 11 boundaries.

Peachy consolidated with Lindfield, taking the score to 164 when the enduring Lindfield was removed by Dolby with a fine catch by Brenton. A mini collapse followed- Peachy departed for a sound 28, and became Prisk's fourth victim. Copp then allowed Dolby to penetrate his defence and went for a score of just one run, while Sandy Bradbeer decided to do a little gardening which led to his departure without score, becoming Prisk's final conquest.

At 176 for a loss of seven, Tideford looked a little disappointing. However, this all changed late on, as Lister, Osborne and Andy Lockett took the bat to the ball and exploited the tiring fielders and bowlers to add another 50 in the last seven overs to produce a competitive score. Tideford ended on a very respectable 226 for eight.

Grampound opened well, with Cocker and Brentons scoring steadily and keeping up with the required rate. Dave Lockett threatened occasionally but, with a few over-pitched, both batsmen were able to score. Osborne was tighter at the other end, and took the first wicket when the score had reached a not-inconsiderable 70. Brentons departed for a fine 24, being caught by Luiten. Cocker and Lean added another 64 before Peachy, who was regularly beating the bat, bowled the opener with a fine delivery for 49.

Bradbeer came on at the pavilion end and soon had Dolby caught on the boundary by Luiten for 21. Lean added an excellent 47 before being bowled by D Lockett. At 179 for five after 43 overs, the target looked to be beyond their grasp, but Emery and Wignall held off the speed attack of Dave Lockett and Danny Copp to hurry sixes and fours to the boundary and reach the winning target with four balls to spare.
