Looe v Colan

Electing to bat first, Looe had to overcome the shock of losing Peter Nance with just one run on the board. They were indebted to Jonathan Nance and Adam Nicholas for a 59-run stand for the second wicket against a tight sustained opening spell by Justin Wright and Anthony Rundle. Nicholas hit 21 and Nance 34, his side's highest individual score. However, all of the rest of the Looe middle order made valuable contributions- Phil Shepley scored 27 and Robin Trethowan made 30 and then Tim Shepley hit an excellent undefeated 33 enabled the home side to post a respectable 185. The Colan bowlers shared the wickets, spinners D Killick and J Phillips took 2-69 and 2-28 respectively, Wright 2-40 and Rundle 1-35.

Colan were pinned down by Looe's opening attack of the pace of Simon Farley and the guile of Mike Pengelly's left and spin only 30 runs coming in the first 20 overs for the loss of two wickets. Anthony Rundle, who batted well for his 39, and Justin Phillips, 19, shared a 52-run stand but otherwise only M Rundle reached double figures, returning 2-20 from his 11 over spell while Mike Pengelly must have thought the gods to be against him for though his 16 overs overs cost only 24 he remained wicketless. Robin Trethowan was again successful, taking 3-38 and Jonathan Nance claimed the other two for 28.
