Grampound Road v Tideford
Part two of this weekend encounter with Grampound Road saw Tideford win the toss and elect to bat first on a pitch that had yielded 400 runs the previous day. Both teams were missing a number of regulars and so the game promised to be as close as the game the day before. However, the match did not go quite according to plan, as Tideford slumped to 64 for a loss of four wickets after 18 overs.
The up-and-down season for Messrs Luiten and Snowdon continued as both went cheaply. The only real contribution at first came from second team captain D Holland, with a score of 22. It was then left to M Lister and D Lockett to rebuild the innings. With cautious pace at first, then with quick running between the wicket, the tempo increased.
After a partnership of 73, Lockett departed and it was left to Lister, ably assisted by the lower order, to push the score towards 200. Thirty-nine runs off the last four overs enabled the innings to close on a competitive 212-8. Lister finally fell to the last ball of the innings for a commendable 73.
Tideford knew that they would have to bowl a better length if they were to reverse the result of the previous day, and D Copp, relishing the opportunity to open the bowling, proved equal to the task as he bowled a very lively opening spell.
He was duly rewarded with the wicket of the Grampound Road captain. Lockett also found the right length and proved to be very difficult to score off. With the introduction of Sandy and David Bradbeer into the bowling attack, Grampound Road could have expected to increase the tempo of the innings, but with the younger Bradbeer bowling a good variation in flight, Grampound Road fell further and further behind the asking rate.
More risks were taken and on this occasion, Tideford held on to their catches. With 73 required off the last six overs, Lockett returned to take two quick wickets and effectively seal the victory so well set up by D Bradbeer, who bowled the last 16 overs from one end for only 58 runs when seven an over was required. S Matthews was the most effective batsmen hitting a fluent 72 before being finally run out. The final margin of victory was 44 runs, but did not reflect truly the closeness of the game.
Scores - Tideford 212-8 (M Lister 73, D Lockett 36, D Holland 22, D Prisk 3-47). Grampound Road 168-8 (S Matthews 72, C Trudgeon 23, D Lockett 4-36).
Tideford (19 pts) beat Gram-pound Road (8) by 44 runs.
