Menheniot v

St Austell

LAST season Menheniot were playing their league cricket in what we now call Division Two east and St Austell were playing in the old County One, or Premier league! However, following a promotion for the village side and a self imposed drop from the top league for Saints the two sides met in first team league action at the County Ground last Saturday.

The home side won the toss and duly invited Menheniot to bat first on what appeared to be a good track that had been well covered from the week's rain. The now established opening pair of Dan Lee and Phil Goldsmith set about the bowling in the usual fashion, they smashed it! The fifty came up after six overs as the pair played freely, hitting the bad and good ball for boundaries to the delight of the spectators, both home and away. Lee was stumped for 34 after coming down the track for the big one but left with the score in good shape at 75-1 after 12 overs. Goldsmith continued using attack as the best form of defence and went on to make a 52 that included eight boundaries and one giant straight six, When he was bowled by Bone the score in the 19th over was 102-2.

Alex Tunnadine and Simon Hunt began the task of building on this excellent start but things did not carry on as hoped. Hunt departed for 12 and the season's top scorer to date, Phil Adsett, only made five before he joined Hunt in the pavilion. At this point the score had crawled along to 124-4 after 31 overs, just 24 runs in 12 overs and the home side were up again, batsman Ed Nickelson declaring to anyone that was listening that he felt a ton coming on!

Skipper Hugh Rogers joined Tunnadine at the crease and very quickly the board got moving again. Alex then began to show St Austell what his team mates already knew, that he can play some very big shots when required and he went on to contribute a very valuable 54 runs and showing en route what a dangerous player he is and will continue to be. His departure saw Dave Herbert join Rogers at the crease and the scoreboard was in good hands (this pair added 180 runs between them on the same ground the previous season!). Running well between the wickets the pair added 35 runs before Herbert was bowled for 17 going for the big one. In the penultimate over Rogers' knock saw him total 51 before being run out in the last over attempting to add vital runs to an already impressive, if not unchaseable score. Last pair Ian Goldsmith and John Carpenter added six more after 48 overs Menheniot had managed 253-7, Jerry Randle taking the sweepstake!

St Austell's reply began well but flattered in the sixth over when Dave Herbert got through the defence of Ian Collings with late swing to leave middle and leg stump lying nicely on the ground. This brought former Cornwall batter Nickelson to the crease to partner young Bone who was playing positively at the other end never afraid to use the aerial route to success, and why not! The home spectators must have heard about the ton that the confident Nickelson had felt coming on because by the time he entered the middle a good sized crowd had developed. Unfortunately he couldn't live up to his predication and if Hawkeye had been in place then he wouldn't have made the 26 that he did before he was well bowled by Rogers in the 22nd over with the score at 82-2.

Young Bone proved difficult to remove and in Craig Richards he found a partner, the pair continued scoring well keeping the home side on course for a possible victory and with 13 overs to go they needed 110 runs and had lost just three wickets. Rogers removed Richards (36) and Herbert sent Bray back after his three runs. Finally Bone was caught and bowled Rogers (62) and as he departed so did his teams chances. nobody else really threatened to take the visitors bowling on and Rogers and Herbert bowled out their 16 overs spells taking three and two wickets respectively. St Austell ended on 202-6, some 51 runs short of the total needed for victory and Menheniot were once again in jubilant mood as they had gained eighteen vital away points.

Still taking nothing for granted Menheniot are starting to look like a well balanced team who will prove difficult to beat. Next week, a double weekend, Saturday sees a home game against Bocconoc and on Monday they travel to the 'Lions Den' that is St Blazey full of confidence after five wins from five and still top of the league.

Gorran v

Werrington

AN entertaining partnership of 59 between Bob Adams (20) and Chris Lovell (34) for the second wicket saw Gorran reach 90 from 20 overs and gave rise to hopes of a large total for the home side.

However, despite useful contributions, from Fred Semple (17), Robert Hurrell (24), Alan Lund (10, Kevin Harris (13) and Rom Blamey (10 n.o.) and the bonus of 32 extras, Gorran could only reach an all out total of 166 before being dismissed in the 47th over. The Smeeth (father and son) bowling combination (together, 6 wickets for 87 runs in 32 overs) had seriously affected Gorran's prospects.

The visitors lost three wickets in reaching 34, but several spilled catches and a missed stumping permitted Werrington's N Ward (47) to collectively make 111 of the runs required and Werrington's victory was gained with five overs to spare.

Callington v

Newquay

CALLINGTON suffered their third straight defeat when they were easily beaten by Rob Harrison and his Newquay team mates.

On being inserted Callington struggled from the start against the tight bowling of Steve Jacques and especially Steve Hawkey.

Losing wickets to the young swinger Rob Harrison only Peter Tancock showed an inclination to register a large score.

With Graham Drew also chipping in with three wickets, Newquay were always in control. When Tancock finally went, bowled by that man Harrison for 38.

Callington innings was all but over. They finally finished on 130 all out with Harrison finishing with 7-21.

Chasing such a small total Newquay could afford to wait for the odd bad ball.

That man Harrison was the main tormentor of Callington's attack and with Jacques added 66 for the second wicket.

Skipper Ian Hunn, aided by alert fielders, struck with three quick wickets but Harrison had the final work. He hit the winning runs to finish on 64 not out and make him undoubtedly the man of the match.
