THE organisers of the St Dominick Gymkhana and Dog Show had hoped to be holding their 50th event this Sunday - but with just a few days to go, the event has had to be postponed due to COVID.

Organiser Diana Irons is in isolation after her husband, Jerome, tested positive for the illness. She says it is hoped to hold the 50th show later in the year.

The event was started back in 1968 by four local girls, Diana Irons (nee Morrish), Sally Lovejoy (Battishill), Suzanne Cuming (Daw) and Joanne White (Rogers).

Rosettes were hand-made by the girls and consisted of a square of cardboard with two strips of ribbon glued on (sometimes rather messily). Very different from the beautiful two and three tier awards on offer this year.

Competition in the early days was modest, as the event was an invitation-only affair, with the girls only inviting people they thought they could beat!

The show has taken place since the beginning at Smeaton Farm, just half a mile out of the village, courtesy of the late Geoff Martin, and more recently Chris Poad. The venue is stunning: spectators can enjoy panoramic views of the Tamar Valley, Dartmoor and Plymouth.

“Traditional values have been maintained, such as keeping the title Gymkhana rather than Horse Show, and resisting calls to expand – although we now operate four rings,” says Diana.

“The object of the show has always been to ensure that competitors enjoy a special day. Entrants are encouraged by sympathetic judging and sensibly built fences.

“Fundraising has been secondary, but over £15,000 has been raised for local charities over the years.”

Local families and businesses have donated trophies over the years and extra financial support has been obtained from Helluva Past ies, Tamar Valley Meats and Kivells Auctioneers for the 50th event.

The ever-popular Dog Show is itself over 40 years old, having been brought in to make the show more attractive to non-horsey villagers. At least 50 dogs and their handlers are expected this time, and will be judged as always by vets from the Calweton Veterinary Practice.
