Disappointment has been expressed by the family and friends of Looe pensioner and grandmother Susan Norman that the inquest into the circumstances surrounding her tragic death has been further delayed. Tuesday (March 22) will be the third anniversary of Mrs Norman’s death when her home in Sandplace Road was engulfed by a huge landslide during a winter storm in March 2013. The delay to the inquest, which had been due to take place in May, is due to the withdrawal from the case of Cornwall Coroner Dr Emma Carlyon. As the Coroner’s Office is part of Cornwall Council, which could be involved in the proceedings, Dr Carlyon felt this might result in a perception of a conflict of interest. A new inquest date and venue will be announced once a new coroner from outside the county has been assigned to the case. Looe resident David Holford said: ‘Susan Norman was a close friend to my wife, and a dear friend to so many locally. The tragedy three years ago remains with us all constantly. Each of us will be aware of aspects of the situation and evidence yet to be revealed. The reasons for the inquest delay will, I believe, be commented upon in due course. ‘Sadly, the long wait for family, friends and neighbours is having to be endured. For their sake and any local concerns, the inquest demands a full and intensive investigation, incorporating the gathering of information and evidence, and interviews of all who can shed light on the reasons, whys and wherefores, enabling a conclusive verdict to be announced publicly, to all who think about Susan innocently losing her life in such terrible circumstances.’
