A COUPLE who say that sharing interests is the secret to a long and happy marriage have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Derek and Joan Adams, who live in Kelly Bray, have known each other all their lives: as youngsters they attended the same primary school in Thame, Oxfordshire.

On leaving school, Joan trained as a nurse, and Derek began his career as a Post Office engineer, resuming his work after national service.

The couple settled in Aylesbury and had their son, Richard in 1951, followed by daughter, Julie, in 1954. The family moved to High Wycombe and on Derek’s retirement, he and Joan came to the South West, firstly living in Devon and later moving to Kelly Bray.

Derek says that the secret of their success has been doing things together, inlcuding playing bowls and going on many cruises. The couple have certainly seen a lot of the world together – their daughter Julie says she thinks they have taken around 25 cruises over the years!

The couple enjoyed a socially distanced anniversary celebration in their garden, with friends, family, and representatives of Callington Town Council in attendance.

Also invited were Emma Burnard, Tina Sandercock and Derek Prickett from the Callington and District Lions. Derek and Joan wanted to say thankyou to the Lions Club for all their support with food and medical deliveries during the lockdown.
