The work involved in getting recently vacated properties ready to let to new tenants as soon as possible is a priority, says Cornwall Council.
Recently, Directors from Cornwall Housing and managing director Jane Barlow visited some empty council properties to see for themselves some of the issues staff can come across when preparing homes to be re-let.
Jane Barlow said: ’The majority of people leave properties with just the usual general wear and tear of every-day life being evident.
’Unfortunately, however, our teams can often come across issues including neglect in the upkeep of a property caused by the lifestyle choices of former tenants or in some case home DIY projects that are unsafe. These can all sometimes require extensive and lengthy work to make suitable for new tenants.’
Current council tenants of Cornwall Housing can call 0300 1234 161 and ask for the assets team if they would like to discuss carrying out potential home improvements so that the correct paperwork can be provided.
If work is carried out without the permission of Cornwall Housing, tenants face the risk of being recharged the costs of returning the property to its previous state.
