THE town council in Saltash is calling on residents with ideas, energy and a passion for the town to step forward and become its newest councillor.
The council is seeking someone to represent Essa Ward, with mayor Cllr Brian Stoyel urging anyone with a vision for Saltash to get involved.
“I’d encourage anyone who has a vision for Saltash to get involved,” said Cllr Stoyel. “Being a town councillor is a rewarding opportunity to represent your community, help shape local priorities and make a positive difference to the town.
“You don’t need previous experience to apply. Ongoing support and training are provided to help councillors develop the knowledge and skills they need, and we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences.”
The recruitment drive runs until September 25, applications closing at noon.
The vacancy became available following the resignation of former town councillor John Brady.
A notice of vacancy was published in July, but Cornwall Council confirmed no request had been received from electors for a by-election within the required timeframe. The seat will therefore be filled through co-option, meaning there will be no public vote.
Instead, eligible candidates can apply directly to Saltash Town Council, with councillors set to consider the applications at the full town council meeting on October 1.
The successful candidate will represent residents in Essa Ward, champion local issues and help shape decisions affecting the town.
Councillors are involved in a wide range of local matters and play a key role in ensuring the views and needs of residents are heard.
The council stressed previous experience is not necessary, with training, guidance and ongoing support available. Potential applicants are also being encouraged to speak to existing councillors to find out more about what the role involves.
The co-option policy and application pack are available from the council offices.
