I am raising the issue of the cost to taxpayers when

emergency services have had to be deployed because the

gritting department hasn't gritted secondary roads, paths

and steps. A couple of weeks ago a woman slipped on a

pathway/steps in East Looe, which had not been gritted.

She was lucky as a member of the Looe RNLI crew

was passing. He called the necessary emergency services.

The crew of the Looe lifeboat were the first on the scene

and should be commended for their actions. The woman

had a suspected broken pelvis. A helicopter (Sea-King)

was scrambled, along with paramedics, ambulance

personnel and our retained fire crew.

How much cheaper it would have been if our new

Cornwall Council could have provided a few kilos of grit,

sand or salt?

Use the resources close at hand – there are several

hundred tonnes of sand on the beach!
