is extradited

SPANISH waiter, Francisco Arce Montez, the man accused of murdering Cornish schoolgirl Caroline Dickinson is expected to face a French court in the New Year.

On Monday night, 51-year-old Montez was extradited to France from the USA, where he had been held in custody for eight months on unrelated sex charges. He is alleged to have raped and murdered 13-year-old Caroline in a hostel room in Brittany during a Launceston Community College trip in July 1996.

High deaths of

marine animals

THERE were 421 beached marine animals recorded along the Westcountry coastline this year - the highest number since l9l3.

Over 50% of these animals have been washed up along the Cornish and Devon coastline, and at least 52 dead dolphins were discovered on beaches in the region in the first four months of 2001.

Site visits

CARADON councillors have arranged a site visit to 22 Dean Street, Liskeard on November 26 at 11am to debate a plan by L McDowell to construct a two storey extension and change the use of the kitchen to a nail studio on the ground floor. A visit will be made at noon on the same day to Gradna, Plaidy, East Looe following an outline application by Mr R Winmill to construct a detached dwelling.

Voting at Liskeard

LISKEARD residents were voting in a Caradon district council by-election for Liskeard South ward yesterday, the vacancy created by the resignation of Conservative member Dawn Austin.Those contesting the seat were Mike Gillbard (Liberal Democrat), Roger Holmes (Mebyon Kernow), and Ian Ritchie (Conservative).

Loos stay open

DUE to visitor numbers remaining high in some areas of Restormel, public conveniences have remained open in many places. Seven public conveniences which would normally have closed on November 1 remained open, including Caffa Mill, main car park and Whitehouse in Fowey.

Ship's sea trials

A MODEL ship builder, whose first model boat CSS Alabama fetched £11,000 when it was sold by Phillips auctioneers in January, has had sea trials for his second ship - the 38-gun frigate Diana. Model-maker Raymond Hunt, 65, of Freathy, gave the Diana sea trials off the beach at Cremyll. In August next year he hopes to sail the 7' long model, dedicated to those who gave their lives in the two world wars, from Cremyll's Edgcumbe Arms pub to HMS Raleigh at Torpoint.

Hole-in-one

AN 81-year-old golfer from Lerryn holed in one while playing the course at Lostwithiel golf and country club. Alistair Todd was playing in the seniors competition when he holed in one on the 180-yard l5th, which is a par three.
