Electrical storm
strikes region
A TROPICAL electrical storm, said to be the worst to hit the South West in 30 years, swept across South East Cornwall on Tuesday night, causing flooding and interrupting power supplies and telephone connections.
As a result of the storm, during which high-tech equipment recorded 31,000 flashes of lightening in 24 hours, telephones at The Cornish Times offices in Liskeard were out of action throughout Wednesday.
The fire service was called to a rash of flooding incidents, in Fowey, Bodmin, St Austell and Plymouth. A roof fire began at a house near Newquay after one lightening strike - in fact an expert said the region had received what amounted to six months of lightening strikes within one day. Of the 31,000 flashes 20,000 were estimated to have occurred in Cornwall.
'Zero tolerance'
call for vandals
MEMBERS of Liskeard in Bloom committee are calling for a zero tolerance policy to be extended to vandals who damage plants and flower tubs - following the arrest of four youths early on Tuesday morning.
The youths, described as semi-naked - wearing nothing on their top and with two dressed just in boxer shorts and the others in jeans - were said to have damaged flower tubs near the surgery and on the town's Parade. They were also said by a police spokesman to have been reported as throwing 'stuff' off of the roof of the Carlton Suite, situated on the Parade.
The incident was reported at around 12.25am, and four people were arrested about 12.40am. The police spokesman said they had been released on bail.
It is thought that CCTV cameras, which are now operating throughout Liskeard, were aptly placed to pick up everything that happened regarding the incident.
The call for zero tolerance to those vandalising plants and flower tubs planted by Liskeard in Bloom, was made by committee chairman, David Rowe. He said he hoped that this incident would be pursued, and that a prosecution would result, to demonstrate that vandalism is not acceptable.
Drugs found in raid
police officers executed a warrant under the misuse of drugs act in Callington at about 9pm on Wednesday night, when a substantial amount of cannabis leaf and resin, also tablets and drugs equipment was seized. Two men and two women were arrested and taken to Charles Cross, Plymouth.
