Boxing Day

rugby for charity

A good crowd turned out at Lux Park on Boxing Day morning to witness what has now become the annual rugby tie between a Liskeard/Looe rugby junior team and the Elderberries, made up of dads and anyone who fancies a game.

The U17's battled well against their 'determined' opponents, only to lose 19-25 in a light hearted encounter, which raised £103 for Cancer Research. Referee was Mike Williams, and everyone enjoyed a lunch in the Sports Club afterwards.

Tamar animal

rescue

NEARLY sixty animals, including dogs, cats, ferrets and chipmunks, had to be rescued from a houseboat moored in the Tamar at Wilcove on Wednesday after the boat fell sideways and cracked open its hull.

Coastguards and the RSPCA mounted the Noah's Ark style rescue when they learned that the houseboat, owned by brother and sister Leslie and Carmalita Fegan, was listing after its supports collapsed at low tide.

To beat the incoming tide they had to mount a mammoth effort to lift off the animals. There were also cockatiels, parrots, rabbits, mice, pet rats and even slowworms on the boat.

Once the animals were safe the coastguards pumped off 30 gallons of diesel to prevent a pollution problem in the river and helped the owners carry away their possessions.

Then the boat sank at the next high tide.

The brother and sister plan to keep their cats and dogs, now in boarding kennels, but want to re-home the rest of the menagerie.

They were both distressed at the loss of their home but thanked the rescue services for saving their animals.
