Tragedy strikes TV personality's family

BBC weatherman Craig Rich has been bravely acting as family spokesman, as well as carrying on with his Spotlight duties during the sad time following the tragic death at Saltash on Friday of his young grand daughter Emily Watson.

Aged just two years and two months, little Emily was found dead in her cot by her mother Joanne, after her normal lunchtime nap following a visit to play school. Doctors at the Port View Surgery and staff at Derriford did everything possible but were unable to revive Emily.

Joanne (33) the daughter of Craig and Pat Rich, and her 34 year old husband Kent are devastated, but are being brave for Emily's four and a half year old brother George. Emily was due to be bridesmaid at the wedding at Rame Head in a month's time of the Rich's youngest daughter Sarah.

A thanksgiving service for Emily is to be held at Wesley Methodist Church, Saltash, at 10.30am on Monday next, January 31.

Prime Minister to visit Cornwall

Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is to visit the West Country next Thursday and Friday - the first time he has travelled to the region since stepping into Number Ten.

His itinerary has not yet been officially announced, but it is thought that he will be visiting Exeter, Plymouth and Cornwall.

MP to open new rural library

Local MP, Colin Breed, is officially to open the new public library sited at Upton Cross primary school on January 31 at 6pm.

Mr Breed said he was delighted to hear of a new rural community service opening. He said: 'This will make it easier for residents to access library facilities in an area with limited public transport.'

Take away is noise nuisance

Texaco who are shortly to become the new owners of the Esso Garage in Station Road, East Looe, are to be asked to refrain from selling food from their premises late at night.

A petition signed by over 100 nearby residents says the facilities at the garage for the heating of take away food by microwave from a kiosk, is encouraging the gathering of large numbers of noisy youths, who are causing disturbances. They want the facilities halted between 12 midnight and 5am.

Tories to choose candidate

The South East Cornwall Conservative Association meets tonight (Friday) January 28, at The Lord Eliot Hotel, Liskeard, at 7.30 pm. to choose their new Parliamentary Prospective Candidate.

The three candidates, all male and married, are the finalists from a total of 46 wishing to represent the traditionally marginal seat which was won by Lib Dem Colin Breed at the last election. He defeated Tory Warrick Lightfoot, who replaced the retiring Sir Robert Hicks, who had been the MP for 25 years.
