The 2000 Royal Cornwall Show will be the first since its founding in 1793 to host three royal guests. Buckingham Palace has announced this week that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will visit the 2000 Royal Cornwall Show on the opening day, Thursday 8th June.
The news has delighted the show's organisers. Said show secretary Christopher Riddle: "The Queen is our patron and we are extremely pleased to be able to welcome Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh in the millennium year. It will make what we already expect to be a special show that much more memorable."
With the Duke of Gloucester as president in the year 2000, the show's links with the royal family will be stronger than ever next year. It will be the Duke's first visit to the show and he will be attending on the second day, Friday 9th June.
Tamar Bridge works are running late
Some elements of the strengthening and widening work, taking place on the Tamar Bridge, are running about a month behind schedule.
The news was to be given to the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferries joint committee this week by bridge and ferries manager, David List. The project costs remain as initially outlined, but in some respects work is running around 30 days late. During September and October there were almost 959 hours of lane closure which represented 21.5 per cent loss of access to the public. However, the landslip at the Saltash tunnel was responsible for about 50 per cent of this.
