The imposing figure of Probus keeper Dave Ellis saved Probus on numerous occasions during this encounter to give the newcomers a share of the points against a skilful Ashes outfit. Gaining confidence with every game Saltash youngster Paul Madden was the first to put Ellis to the test with a fine run and shot. Madden then set up Jason Marks who's effort was saved in the 30th minute.
A 30 yard free kick from Lee Wakeham was then tipped around the upright to send Probus into the dressing room at half time all square. With their tails up after the break Probus had their best spell with new signing Mike Andrews showing up well in midfield. However the home side didn't threaten the Ashes goal with defenders Dave Crocker, Ryan Swiggs and Steve Best always in control for Saltash.
Ashes turned the screw in the final 30 minutes, with Probus defending in numbers, but the deadlock wasn't broken despite Wakeham crashing a thunderbolt of a shot off the bottom of the crossbar in the final two minutes of play.
