A LOCAL Cornwall Councillor has urged Cornwall Council to take immediate action to protect properties from flooding along one of the major commuter routes in East Cornwall.

Andrew Long, Mebyon Kernow’s representative for Callington and St Dominic, made the call after the A388 Saltash to Launceston road once again flooded over Christmas between Callington and Kelly Bray, resulting in houses having to put sand bags around their doors.

At such times a torrent can be seen streaming down the hill and across the roadway.

Cllr Long said: “This has been an ongoing issue for a few years but with the increased intensity of rainfall which has been increased by Climate Change has resulted in the deluge coming down from Kit Hill being too much for the drainage underneath the A388.

“The culvert is being blocked regularly now by stones and rocks and we are going to have a serious incident if this is not dealt with urgently” he added.

“I have requested the Asset Management team to come up with a solution but this needs to be sooner rather than later. The residents to the west of the road at Isacombe are living in constant fear of the next downpour and the impact on their properties from flooding. This cannot continue like this.”

Cornwall Council are said to be looking for a solution to the issue of the blockages to the culvert to the east of the road but as yet no firm decision has been made.
