Saltash Utd 3 Penzance 4 (after extra time)

A very young Ashes side squandered a 3-1 lead at Kimberley Stadiumon Wednesday as they finished this tie with just nine men. A fast flowing cup-tie saw Brian Jefferis fire the Ashes into an 11th minute lead, via the underside of the crossbar, as Saltash dominated the early exchanges. Chris Cutting set up Gareth Jones to make it 2-0 in the 15th minute with Jefferis and Steve Sims both going close to extending their lead before Carl Gazzard pulled a goal back for the Magpies in the 27th minute. Jefferis then rattled the visitors crossbar from 20 yards before Cutting made it 3-1 with a superb overhead kick but Penzance were not finished as Gavin Edwards reduced the arrears before the break. The second half was fairly even until 18 minutes from time when Tom Patrick burst clear only to be felled by Ashes keeper Dan Johnston, who received the customary red card. Danny Gill went in goal for the Ashes. Saltash were reduced to nine men after Steve Murphy had taken his protests too far. Saltash restricted their opponents admirably until the 115th minute when Edwards broke home hearts by grabbing Penzance's winner.

Callington pip league leaders in cup thriller East Cornwall Premier League

Bodmin Town 3 FORGET England v Wales, anyone wanting to see end-to-end action with a goal feast thrown in should have headed to Ginsters Marshfield Parc where the cup holders edged a seven-goal thriller against the current league leaders in the first round of the League Cup. The dozen or so loyal followers who decided to make Callington their venue for football on Saturday afternoon were given 90 minutes of pure entertainment from two teams who seem to be approaching the top of their game. The gusty wind failed to dampen the skills of either side as they sprayed passes around the field and it was table-toppers Bodmin who broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when Daniel May netted from a neat build-up. Chances came and went for both sides but it was not until the fifth minute of the second half that the game exploded into goals. Matt Reid launched a pacy run on the left and he whipped in a cross which Chris Truscott, celebrating the birth of his second child, Eve, on Tuesday, met with a firm header into the net. Five minutes later, Luke Avis-Riordan repeated Reid's act on the right and his low cross into the area was met by Truscott who fired the ball past the Bodmin keeper to put his side ahead. Back came the visitors and they were on level terms within 10 minutes through Nigel Kent. With 20 minutes to go, Callington regained the lead after Pete Floyd chased down a defensive mistake before rounding Dave Philp in the Bodmin goal and scoring. But the visitors had not finished and they quickly pounced on defensive hesitancy by Callington to level matters at 3-3. With the game moving into injury time, and the spectre of a further 30 minutes looming, Floyd's run on the right was ended by a stray leg in the area. Floyd himself stepped up to fire home the resultant spot kick to send his team through to the last eight.
