With both sides sporting a series of unbeaten runs, this game was evenly contested and played in good spirits. Ashes looked the livelier of the sides at the outset and they edged in front in the seventh minute.
Anthony Steel crossed to the near post where Lee Grogan nodded on for the incoming Gregg Baldry to hit the net from 10 yards.
Play remained even but Ashes went further ahead just before half-time. Lee Wakeham's determined run from deep was confidently finished in style with a low drive from the edge of the box which gave Steve Reed no chance in the Torpoint goal.
As the second half progressed there were some weary legs in the Ashes defence as a result of an epic cup tustle with St Blazey two days earlier. Prompted by a good display by Torpoint's Steve Todd and probing runs from Matt Cusack, Torpoint had the initiative.
Steve Murphy put Derek Cox away and he deftly chipped over Ashes' keeper Chris Stacey to put Torpoint back in the game with 20 minutes left. However stirling defensive performances by Dave Crocker, Ryan Swiggs, Steve Anbany and keeper Chris Stacey prevented Torpoint from scoring again.
