Saltash opened strongly taking the game to their lowly opponents and strikers Greg Baldry and Jason Marks were both denied by the alert Lee Carew in the St Cleer goal. Ashes nudged in front in the 22nd minute. Jon Pidgen sprayed a long ball out of defence across field to Greg Baldry and his driven shot from the edge of the area crept inside the upright to put the Ashes deservedly ahead. The second half started evenly with St Cleer defending in numbers but relying on the quick break to keep the Ashes defence on their toes. St Cleer equalised with a bizarre gifted goal due to an uncharacteristic mistake by Saltash keeper Chris Stacey. Thinking an off target St Cleer shot had crossed the bye line he scooped the ball back for a goal kick which gave Dave Moon the opportunity to stroke the ball into an empty net. Saltash pressed hard in the closing minutes but couldn't crack St Cleer's dogged defence and when they had opportunities their finishing was poor.
