Despite the glorious weather for the first week of the school holidays over 125 students from Callington community college and feeder primary schools spent one day each in the food technology area of the college.
The event formed part of a national project involving 100 schools throughout the UK, and was backed by the departments of health and education.
Students were taught about nutrition, food preparation, food safety and hygiene. The day included learning more about healthy eating, preparing and cooking lunch, and baking a selection of healthy cookies to take home at the end of the day.
Local businesses sponsored the event, and Andrew Beddoes of Beddoes Fruit Shop, Liskeard supplied all the fruit and vegetables. Callington sponsors included the Cornish Bakery, Pioneer, Spar and Thames Valley Eggs. Drakelands Produce Ltd of Drakewalls donated mushrooms.
Best Foods (UK) again helped sponsor the week with ingredients, and there was a visit from product relations adviser, Marion Thomas.
The week was co-ordinated by Margaret Singleton who teaches food technology at the college, with the help of Sally Vince, Rotha Mann and Sam Vince.
