Customers and staff at the Old Mill House pub in Polperro have been hard at work enjoying themselves and raising funds towards the upkeep of the harbour – and last week they were able to hand over a cheque for £1,100 to Polperro harbour trustees which will go towards urgently needed work on the flood defence gate and outer pier. The pub has held a series of fundraising events for the project over the past year and most recently staged a beach party evening to raise even more cash, at which the cheque was handed over. Trustee Jacqueline Ruscoe explained that the harbour is entirely self-supporting and that fund- raising events are essential to help meet the cost of major works. Repairs to the flood gate are expected to require £23,000 and the outer pier will probably require some £100,000 spending on it. Other pubs and businesses in the village have been doing their bit towards the fundraising drive. Jacqueline said: 'Such is the commitment that people have helped in various ways – my own parents, who live in Lancashire, came down to run a bric-a-brac stall.'
