Lower Kelly Road in Calstock is to reopen next week, while work continues to complete the new retaining wall constructed since the road collapsed during the winter storms. About 20 homes were cut off and some 40 vehicles were stranded after a section of the road disintegrated on Christmas Day. Cornwall Council has been working ever since to reinstate the route and erect a new wall which, it is hoped, will prevent water building up in the future. The council says it has been unable to find conclusive evidence of the cause of the incident but says it may have been due to water collecting behind the old wall. Holes have been provided in the new one to allow the water to escape. While homes remained cut off the council arranged for supplies of heating oil and other essentials to be made available for residents, and Royal Marine landing craft were used to extract the trapped cars. The council says it hopes to re-open the road on Thursday.
