There is no doubt about which chef is in control at the Royal British Legion Club kitchen in Liskeard where 20-year-old Sam Thompson gives the orders to her second in command... old soldier John Thompson, her father! He is also the Sergeant Major in charge of the Liskeard platoon of the Cornwall Army Cadets. Dad, who learned the secrets of catering during his army service, is happy with the situation although he confesses his daughter 'can be a little bit fussy, especially when it comes to the washing up'. Sam, who recently took over the planning and preparation of meals at the club, is on duty from noon until 2pm then from 7pm until 9pm each day serving up a varied menu for the customers. Liskeard-born John comes from a long line of chefs, including his own father who served with the Royal Navy. Disabled now, he helps Sam for 16 hours a week, giving his services on a voluntary basis.
