A categoric assurance that the future of Liskeard's cattle market is secure was issued by Caradon District Council this week. The move follows earlier speculation over a meeting held on Wednesday at which the market site was due to be discussed in the context of the future development of the town. After the meeting cllr Hugh Francis, chairman of the council's asset management group, issued a statement saying: 'There has been a lot of interest in the future of the Liskeard cattle market site, which, as a large open space and a natural focal point of the town, could play an important role in the town's regeneration. 'However, I would like to dispel any rumours of the market's demise. Whilst we would consider any opportunities that come forward, Caradon is keen to support the market and there are no plans to close it. 'Kivells auctioneers have a 12-year lease on the site and are working closely with us to ensure that any regeneration scheme balances the needs of the market with those of the town as a whole.' Cllr Jim Candy, Caradon's farming ambassador, said Caradon recognised the important part farmers play as custodians of the countryside in the local economy. 'Kivells fulfil an essential role for the farming community by holding markets in Liskeard and have assured us that they are committed to providing market outlets in South East Cornwall,' he said. 'Weekly markets are due to start again in March as the amount of stock coming to the market increases in the spring.' Wednesday's meeting between Liskeard Town Forum, the Chamber of Commerce and the district council focussed on the future of Liskeard town centre and the soon-to-be-published draft town plan, which will outline proposals for Liskeard's future over the next ten to 20 years. Cllr Francis said the discussions at the meeting had covered a broad range of areas, including housing, the development of retail and business land, and a number of potential sites for regeneration. 'The town's future is the priority for all of us, and we are committed to working in partnership to move things forward, particularly in terms of creating new jobs.'
