THE need for Liskeard to make the most of the extra tourists due to flood into Cornwall because of the Eden Project, has been highlighted by town councillors, who have stressed the need for more hotels in the area.

The opportunities that Eden could bring to the tourist industry in South East Cornwall were underlined by town and county councillor Mike Gillbard, at the town council's monthly meeting on Tuesday evening. Mr Gillbard was giving a report on the annual meeting of the South East Cornwall Tourism Association which he had attended earlier in the year.

In his report he said good quality beds, in four to five star hotel accommodation, were needed to really capitalise on the opportunity provided. He also suggested transport links to and from Liskeard to the Eden Project, near St Blazey, should be established, maybe providing a niche for the Liskeard and district Omnibus Company.

Town councillor Roger Holmes also spoke of the lack of bed space locally, but Tony Powell said experience had shown companies who wish to build hotels etc like to look at sites which have obtained planning permission.
